Financial independence is more than sipping cocktails at the beach
The original appeal to the FIRE life when I first discovered it was the fact that I wouldn’t have to work anymore. Spending all day at the beach or watching sport sounded amazing. Not being answerable to a boss.
Over time though, I’ve discovered that it is essential to have things in life that challenge you. That beach lifestyle would get old very quickly. I wouldn’t be stimulated.
So what initially got me interested in financial independence is no longer the dangling carrot motivating me. I have new motivations now, including more meaningful work, volunteering, being a teacher for my daughter, spending more time with friends and family, and more.
And that has been the best, and most surprising part of my journey. I’ve learned to be thankful for what I already have without longing for more. I am now much more appreciative of the finer things in life. Time with family. Meaningful work. Time for leisure activities. Helping others.
Previously I would have been happy with spending all my money, not realizing how much future time I was losing by spending now.
Without learning and understanding about the power of money, time, and financial independence, I don’t think I would have ever come to this conclusion. Not for a long time anyway. And that has been the best accidental finding of this whole journey.
FIRE is far more than saving money to then do nothing. It is about living your best life.
